Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Athens public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Proposed Piketon gas plant air quality concerns
A resident's research into a massive 10-gigawatt gas plant proposed in Pike County for an OpenAI data center prompted council discussion — the plant's emissions could reach Athens on downwind days. The mayor plans testimony urging cleaner catalytic generators and may work with other Ohio cities.
Briarwood median planting
The city has no immediate objections to planting trees in the Briarwood median, and neighbors are thrilled — they say the street gets burning hot in summer. A spring volunteer community planting is being planned, pending utility location checks.
2027 Sewer Rates Adopted (Ordinance 81-26)
Sewer bills would rise 4% in 2027 — about $1.60–$2 a month for most households — to cover debt on the wastewater plant, contract raises, and needed improvements to aging clarifiers and lines. Council was told holding rates flat would just delay bigger hikes later.
Portable Flood Barriers and Stormwater Work
Service-Safety Director Andy Stone reported three to five inches of rain fell in a short period on August 11, flooding businesses along Richland Avenue. The city is meeting with affected business owners about the 2025 Army Corps of Engineers Coates Run report and possible flood mitigation.
Vore Ridge landfill gas monitoring
After the lab tech who did methane checks retired, the city will hire a contractor ($15,000 from trash funds) to keep monitoring five wells at the closed landfill and file EPA reports.
