Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Athens public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Warren Road street conditions
A lifelong resident says the dead-end street off Pomeroy Road is barely passable after poor patching and storm damage, and his calls to the city went unreturned.
Richland Avenue road project hurting businesses
From August 10 to about September 10, the Dairy Lane/Richland Avenue intersection closes for a 20-25-foot-deep sewer line replacement — right when school starts. Detours run off US 33/50/52/32; businesses stay open.
Parking garage design problems
Members Swank and Thomas flagged that the parking garage exit has a bad turning radius forcing drivers out of their cars, discouraging people from using the garage as an alternative to street parking.
State Route 682 Major Rehabilitation Funding
Two ordinances would fund the city's share of the SR 682 rehab via a zero-percent, $499,000 State Infrastructure Bank loan and an ODOT payment, both on second reading.
Court and State Intersection Improvements (Project #398)
The brick crosswalks at Court and State are nearly impossible for wheelchair users to cross. Council fast-tracked a $420,000 CDBG-funded design-build project to place the bricks on a level concrete base, targeting construction between Thanksgiving and OU's spring semester.
Transit access for low-income residents
With no bus route planned for the site, carless residents would face a 20-minute walk down a steep hill to reach the only bus stop — across a four-lane highway. HAPCAP says on-demand vans could serve the site but no fixed route is planned.
Donal Lane road design and township maintenance
The county engineer is concerned about the reverse-crowned (concave) road design during heavy rain, and the township trustee questions snow plowing and turnaround on it.
Avenel Drive road safety and traffic capacity
Residents say the steep, narrow, unlit road can't safely handle traffic from 60 new apartment units, especially with children walking to school buses at the bottom of the hill. They want a professional traffic impact study before any approval.
2026 Street Paving Pause
Mary Abel asked why streets aren't being repaired this summer despite a dedicated levy running through 2030; the answer appears to be a planned pause due to street-fund constraints.
West Washington sidewalk and safety improvements
A $2,300 CDBG-funded bookkeeping fix for the completed 2024 West Washington sidewalk, lighting and sight-line safety project that students said made nighttime walking safer.
