Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Athens public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
City-funded bike path and Columbus Road median plantings
The city has money set aside to contract tree planting along the bike path (which turns out to be largely university land, needing OU approval) and to landscape the Columbus Road medians, whose shallow soil may favor planting beds over trees. The commission is targeting spring and divided up planning tasks.
Community playground and park projects
A proposed $105,000 renovation of the preschool playground ran into pushback from Council Member Swank, who inspected the equipment and found it in excellent shape, questioning whether the money is needed.
Pre-kindergarten playground renovation
The 26-year-old pre-K playground behind the Community Center would get an $80,000 appropriation with up to $105,000 in spending authority. Council Member Swank questioned the need, the missing shade plan, artificial turf safety, and the extra $10,000 above the $94,295 quote; other members who visited the site defended the replacement, and pre-K classes are doubling this fall.
